Why Context Matters More than you Think

benbenson · November 15, 2024 · 5 min read

Often we can find ourselves struggling to understand why we’re stuck, why our efforts don’t seem to pay off, or why we keep encountering the same problems over and over. It’s easy to attribute these challenges to external circumstances, or to blame ourselves for not being good enough, smart enough, or disciplined enough. Yet often, what truly holds us back isn’t our abilities or our circumstances—it’s our perspective.

We operate from a limited view, shaped by our upbringing, our past experiences, and the familiar rhythms of daily life. This is our context, the unseen environment that frames our thinking, behaviors, and beliefs. It’s the water the fish swims in, the air we breathe without noticing. We make choices and set goals based on what seems possible or reasonable within this frame, unaware of how deeply it shapes our reality.

Here’s the challenge: you can’t see the picture when you’re inside of the frame.

The Influence of Context on Performance

Context determines what we believe to be true, what we see as problems, and what solutions we consider. It affects our relationships, our work, and our sense of self. When we’re fully immersed in our own frame of reference, we rarely question it. We accept its boundaries as the edge of the world. This is why we sometimes stay in unhealthy relationships, tolerate dead-end jobs, or hold on to outdated beliefs—we can’t see beyond the frame we’re inside.

Our performance in life, whether at work, in our personal relationships, or in our own growth, is often limited by this narrow perspective. When we fail to achieve what we want, it’s not always because we lack skill or effort; it’s often because we haven’t stepped back to examine the frame we’re working within. It’s like trying to solve a puzzle while only looking at a single piece—you might have all the tools you need, but you lack the context to put them together effectively.

Stepping Outside the Frame

The moments of greatest clarity often come when we step outside our usual context. Think about how new ideas often emerge during a vacation, when you’re away from your daily grind, or after a deep conversation that challenges your existing beliefs. This isn’t a coincidence; it’s because distance creates perspective. It allows you to see the whole picture rather than just the small part you were focused on.

One of the most effective ways to gain this broader view is through intentional reflection and seeking diverse experiences. Conversations with people from different backgrounds, travel, or even moments of quiet meditation can act as opportunities to step outside your frame. These experiences expand your context, allowing you to see things in a new light and often reveal solutions you couldn’t see before.

The Role of Feedback

Feedback is another way we can gain perspective. Honest input from trusted friends, mentors, or coaches can provide us with glimpses of the bigger picture. They stand outside the frame of our lives and can often see things we cannot. However, feedback can be uncomfortable because it challenges our context—it points out the walls of the frame we didn’t even realize were there.

Yet, embracing this discomfort is key to growth. It’s in those moments of challenge and discomfort that we begin to stretch our perspective, seeing beyond our self-imposed limitations.

Expanding Your Frame

Expanding the frame doesn’t just mean looking at things differently; it means fundamentally reshaping the context in which you operate. This is why shifts in mindset are often so powerful. When you realize that your challenges are not inherent truths but products of your limited perspective, the frame starts to widen. You begin to see possibilities and opportunities that were always there but previously hidden.

Consider how artists often step back from their canvas to gain a better view of their work. Up close, they see only small, disconnected parts of the painting. But when they step back, the full composition emerges. Life is much the same. If you never take a step back, you can spend years obsessing over small, isolated details, unaware of how they fit into the larger picture.

The Takeaway

In our pursuit of success and significance, we often focus on the obvious factors: effort, skills, and resources, the transactional. But context—the frame we’re living in—is the invisible influence that shapes everything we do. This is the transformational level of development (see my Performance Capability Continuum). The key to breaking through stagnation or frustration isn’t always about trying harder or doing more. Sometimes, it’s about stepping outside of your current frame, questioning your assumptions, and expanding your context.

After all, you can’t see the picture when you’re inside of the frame. And if you can’t see the whole picture, how can you know what’s truly possible? By stepping back, gaining perspective, and expanding our context, we give ourselves the best chance to create a life that aligns with our true potential. In doing so, we start to paint a picture that reflects not just the narrow view we’ve been confined to, but the broader vision of who we truly are and what we can achieve.
