Life on Three Levels…Where Are You?

benbenson · September 17, 2024 · 5 min read

People approach life in a variety of ways, but their efforts and attitudes tend to fall into one of three categories: 1. Sloppy, 2. Casual, or 3. Disciplined. These levels define how individuals respond to life’s challenges and opportunities, and ultimately, they shape the quality of their experiences and achievements. Although life is inherently hard, the way one navigates difficulties depends greatly on which of these levels they choose to operate from. Paradoxically, it is by choosing the harder path of discipline that people find the greatest rewards, not because life becomes easier, but because they themselves become stronger, more capable, and more effective.

1. The Sloppy Level

At the lowest level is the Sloppy way of living. People who live here tend to do the bare minimum, avoiding responsibility and discipline. Their lives are marked by disorganization, procrastination, and lack of structure. These individuals often allow external circumstances to dictate their outcomes, giving up control over their futures. As a result, they struggle more with the demands of life because they lack the necessary skills and habits to manage even basic challenges effectively.

While this approach may offer temporary comfort, it ultimately leads to greater frustration and stagnation. The chaos of a sloppy life creates unnecessary stress, forcing these individuals to react to problems instead of proactively addressing them. They may feel that life is unfairly hard on them, but in truth, the disarray of their approach makes it harder than it needs to be.

2. The Casual Level

The next level is Casual living. People who fall into this category do not necessarily avoid responsibility, but they only engage with it when it’s convenient. They maintain a general sense of balance and perform what is expected, but they are not committed to going beyond the minimum. Casual living involves a mixture of effort and avoidance—enough to get by, but never enough to excel.

Casual people can enjoy moderate success, achieving goals that are within their comfort zone. However, they often fall short of their potential because they avoid discomfort and challenging growth. Life on this level may seem easier in the short term, but over time, these individuals may find themselves frustrated by the limitations of their efforts. The casual approach to life creates a false sense of security, as challenges will inevitably arise that they are not prepared to handle. Casual living leads to mediocrity because it lacks the intention and rigor needed for real achievement.

3. The Disciplined Level

At the highest (and rarest) level is Disciplined living. This is where the most effective people operate. Those who choose discipline understand that life is inherently difficult, but they also realize that growth, success, and mastery come from embracing difficulty, not avoiding it. They commit themselves to self-improvement, organization, and responsibility, pushing through discomfort in pursuit of their goals.

While the disciplined path is the hardest initially, it brings the greatest rewards and is disproportionately beneficial. This is because disciplined individuals develop skills, habits, and resilience that allow them to handle challenges with increasing ease. The harder you are on yourself, the easier life becomes. It’s not that life itself becomes easier—its challenges remain—but disciplined people are better equipped to face and overcome them. Their preparation, consistency, and focus allow them to navigate life with more effectiveness, confidence and capability.

By embracing discipline, people build a foundation that supports their growth and achievement. They understand that the greatest successes are not found in the moments of comfort but in the moments of difficulty, when they push beyond their limits. With each difficult task they master, they grow stronger and more capable.

The Rewards of Choosing Discipline

The choice to live a disciplined life is not just about being hard on oneself for the sake of it. It’s about realizing that enduring hardship and embracing challenges is where the best rewards come from. As people develop the skills and habits needed to thrive in difficult situations, they also unlock opportunities that would remain out of reach for those living sloppy or casual lives. Over time, the disciplined person finds joy in their ability to achieve goals, solve problems, and continue growing.

Ultimately, the disciplined life offers a sense of fulfillment and purpose. The struggle to improve leads to personal satisfaction, success, and a more meaningful life. Those who live this way don’t just survive the challenges of life—they thrive because they have built the capacity to take on more and achieve more than they once thought possible.

Conclusion

Life is hard for everyone, but the way people approach that difficulty determines their outcomes. The Sloppy and Casual ways of living may seem easier at first but lead to greater challenges down the road. Discipline, though difficult, equips people with the tools, resilience, and skills necessary to make life not easier, but more rewarding. It is through discipline that individuals unlock their potential and achieve their greatest success. The harder you are on yourself, the easier life becomes. By doing the hard thing and choosing the hard path of discipline, we make ourselves stronger and ultimately create a life of fulfillment and achievement.
